By 1994 the condition of the three covered bridges still in use in Washington County had declined to the point where the longest, most used span was considered for replacement with a modern steel and concrete bridge. This book tells the story of how local concerned citizens organized, cooperated with elected officials, and secured funding for the complete restoration of all three bridges, which were rededicated in 2007.

This 72-page book includes an historic overview of local transportation, histories of five covered bridges, an introduction to trusses and how they work, and a detailed description of the engineering design process and construction techniques used to restore the three bridges. Over 150 illustrations.
